Grocon Constructors, head contractors for Development Victoria’s 2016 Bushfire Clean-up project, have won an award at the 2017 Resilient Australia Awards.
The Resilient Australia Awards are a national program to recognise and promote initiatives which strengthen community disaster resilience across the nation.
Following the devastating bushfires in December 2015 that impacted 178 properties across Victoria, Development Victoria and Grocon delivered the clean-up and recovery efforts in Wye River, Separation Creek, Barnawartha and Scotsburn.
The project ran from March 2016 to June 2016 with achievements including:
- Removing bushfire waste and hazardous material safely on a steep landscape with challenging geotechnical conditions;
- Providing value back to the community by employing local businesses and people;
- Raising money for the local CFA; and,
- Creating a “Bushfire Clean-up Manual” which passed on learnings and procedures to assist strengthening the community to respond to future incidents.
The project also delivered significant environmental initiatives such as:
- Recycling 303 tonne of steel locally,
- Providing wood for carvings and firewood,
- Providing woodchips for mulch,
- Recycling concrete for local road surfaces, and,
- Collecting material for a local artist sculpture.
Commendably, Grocon also provided their services on a cost recovery basis with no profit margin.
The project is now in the running for the National Award which is to be presented in Canberra in November.
