The major construction works on the $449 million Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre have now been completed, marking a significant milestone for a project that has strengthened local employment and supported Geelong’s construction and manufacturing sectors.
Throughout construction, the project created more than 1,400 jobs, trained 250 apprentices and engaged over 440 subcontractors, suppliers and consultants, many from the Geelong region, which has injected millions of dollars into the local economy. With testing and final fitouts underway, the centre is on track to officially open in July.
Once operational, Nyaal Banyul is expected to create hundreds of additional jobs across hospitality, tourism, events and services. Conferences and events are already scheduled from July, set to deliver immediate economic benefits through visitor spending on accommodation, dining and local experiences.
Nyaal Banyul is the centrepiece of the $676 million Geelong City Deal - a partnership between the Australian and Victorian governments and the City of Greater Geelong - aimed at boosting the region’s visitor economy. The project is being delivered through a precinct partnership led by Development Victoria and the Plenary Conventions consortium, with the venue to be managed by the Victorian Convention and Event Trust.
Development Victoria’s Executive General Manager Civics, Hannah Clement, said the completion of major construction represents a significant achievement for all partners involved in bringing the precinct to life.
Delivering Nyaal Banyul on time and on budget reflects our strong project leadership and commitment to delivering projects that make a real difference. We are proud to have worked alongside our project partners to bring this precinct to life.

The precinct has been shaped in partnership with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, ensuring the design reflects local identity and cultural heritage. This includes the new landscaped plaza featuring event spaces, outdoor dining, an 80 squaremetre LED screen and more than 1,700 Indigenous and native plants.
The project also created pathways to employment for people facing barriers to work through the award winning GCEC Early Engagement Social Procurement program, which created more than 40 apprenticeships.
