The Victorian Government has shared its long-term vision for the transformation of Central Pier and the adjacent waterfront in Docklands, drawing inspiration from successful waterfront locations around the world.
The Revitalising Central Pier Waterfront Vision and Place Principles sets out the vision to transform the heart of Docklands into a gathering place at the water’s edge where the city’s creative energy comes together in welcoming spaces.
Development Victoria’s Group Head Precincts, Niall Cunningham, emphasised the significance of the Vision and Place Principles as an important step in creating a vibrant, community-focused space by the water.
“This new vision highlights what matters most to the community and stakeholders as we plan the future of Central Pier and the adjacent waterfront,” said Niall.
It will stimulate further ideas and opportunities with community and the private sector as we work together to create a destination where people can connect, reflect, and celebrate.
The vision and place principles were developed following extensive consultation with the community and other key stakeholders.
Docklands is one of Australia’s largest urban renewal projects and has undergone remarkable transformation over the past decade.
“The incredible evolution of Docklands exemplifies the success of government and private sector partnerships in urban renewal, which we aim to replicate in revitalising the pier.”
The removal of Central Pier is a pivotal step toward its transformation as we start to consider viable opportunities for its future.
Development Victoria will continue to collaborate with Heritage Victoria, the City of Melbourne, the Docklands community, Traditional Owners, and other key stakeholders to transform the precinct into one of Australia’s premier waterfront destinations.
