Construction is officially underway on the Armstrong Creek Sports Centre, delivering a major boost for sport and recreation for the Geelong region.

The project has reached a major milestone, with head contractor Fairbrother Pty Ltd commencing work on the new facility, which will bring much needed indoor and outdoor sports and recreation spaces to one of Victoria’s growing communities.

Once complete, the centre will feature four indoor multi-sport courts, a café and community gathering space, modern changing facilities, a dedicated sensory room, and car parking with electric vehicle charging.

Opening onto a vibrant civic plaza, the centre will also offer outdoor basketball and netball hoops, skating and parkour areas, informal play spaces, table tennis tables and a large, landscaped lawn providing a welcoming place for locals to come together and connect.

The start of construction was officially marked last week, with project partners, Traditional Owners, and representatives from Fairbrother Pty Ltd in attendance to celebrate the milestone.

Recognition of Wadawurrung Country is at the heart of the design response for this project, and a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Wadawurrung Woman Corrina Eccles acknowledged the project’s strong connection to Country and the importance of embedding cultural recognition into the design.

Between the hills and the waterways, surrounded by red gum trees, with birds in abundance, this land (Dooliebeal) has been a rich cultural landscape for Wadawurrung People for thousands of years. It is heartening that there will be recognition of our people through Wadawurrung storytelling that will be seen in the façade design and across the precinct.

The project has been designed by Warren and Mahoney Architects, with a focus on environmental sustainability, and the centre has been registered to receive a Five Star Green Star certification.

As head contractor for the project, Fairbrother brings significant experience delivering high-profile projects, including the recent Werribee Open Range Zoo Expansion, and will lead construction through to the project’s expected completion in late 2026.

Benjamin Delaney, Acting Group Head Civic Infrastructure at Development Victoria, said getting works underway is a major step forward for the region.

It’s fantastic to see construction begin on this important project, which will provide much needed indoor sports infrastructure for Armstrong Creek, support jobs during construction, and create a lasting asset for the community.

Development Victoria is delivering eight new and upgraded sporting infrastructure projects across regional Victoria over the coming years as part of the Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, bringing locals the sporting facilities they want and need, attracting visitors to the regions, and providing opportunities for local businesses through the delivery of these projects.

This project is being delivered by Development Victoria in partnership with Sport and Recreation Victoria and the Greater City of Geelong to ensure the sports centre caters to the local community and delivers positive outcomes for the region.
