Early demolition works are underway at the former Kangan TAFE site on The Avenue in Coburg to make way for more homes close to existing jobs, transport and services.

Acting Executive General Manager, Nemesia Kennett, said the works mark an important milestone in the site's transformation.

The Avenue, Coburg, is an incredible opportunity to create a vibrant community in a well established suburb, right where people want to live.

The proposed plans will deliver up to 275 apartments across a four-building complex, with one of the buildings dedicated to build-to-rent, supporting a variety of households and budgets.

“The mix of housing on the site will cater for a diverse range of people on a range of incomes and living arrangements, accommodating the diverse housing needs of the Coburg community,” Nemesia said.

Designed by Hayball Architects, the new development will look to incorporate bricks from the former Moreland Central School building on the site, paying homage to the site's history while encouraging sustainable reuse of materials.

Development Victoria is progressing with the selection of a builder for the main works, having recently invited selected bidders to participate in the Request for Proposal (RFP) process. A successful builder is expected to be announced late-2025.

Early works are expected to take approximately 5 months, with construction of the apartments to follow, subject to further approvals.

“As part of our plan to create a neighborhood, we are working with Merri-bek Council to deliver a new public park on part of The Avenue, which will link to existing vacant land next to Kids on The Avenue Childcare Centre,” Nemesia said.

Involving our community in the creation of the new public park is a great demonstration of how we are delivering spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Registrations of interest for prospective homebuyers are now open and works on the sales office on Sydney Road Coburg will also commence shortly, with sales expected to be released to the public in late-2025.
