Preliminary investigations are underway at the former Ballarat Saleyards site, before it undergoes important remediation works due to its historical use as a livestock exchange.
Work will include on-site soil testing at around 100 locations and groundwater monitoring. Where required, an excavator will be used to remove paved or hard-surface areas.
Group Head Housing Penelope Forrest said remediating the land is a really important step in unlocking this unused land to enable future redevelopment opportunities to benefit the growing region.
The Ballarat Saleyards is beautifully located and by unlocking it we can explore potential employment and housing opportunities in the longer term which will greatly benefit the Ballarat region.

“Once remediation activities are completed, we’ll explore a new employment precinct for the site and, in the longer term, new homes to support the growing needs of the Ballarat region.”
The strategic planning for the future use of the site will be led by the City of Ballarat, with support from Development Victoria to facilitate urban renewal and a mixed-use precinct development.
Following completion of the preliminary investigations this year, Development Victoria will facilitate the remediation of the site which will commence in 2025.
