The brand new state-of-the-art vertical sports centre at Fitzroy Gasworks has officially been named the Bundha Sports Centre.
The new name was gifted by Wurundjeri Elders, Aunty Diane Kerr, Aunty Gail Smith and Aunty Julieanne Axford and supported by the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation (WWCHAC).
The name ‘Bundha’ means ‘unity’ and captures how the venue will unite the community by supporting local sports clubs and encourage more of the community to get active.
Group Head Civic Infrastructure, Hannah Clement, said engagement with Wurundjeri Traditional Owners continues to be a key element of the Fitzroy Gasworks precinct with some architectural features in the sports centre featuring Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung cultural elements.
It’s an honour to be gifted Bundha Sports Centre as the new name so we can acknowledge the culture of the Traditional Owners of the land it is built on and celebrate the role Wurundjeri people play in our heritage and history.
It’s exciting to see Bundha Sports Centre now becoming a reality and providing an innovative state of the art sports venue in the heart of bustling Fitzroy.
Wurundjeri Elders, Aunty Gail Smith and Aunty Diane Kerr shared the word Bundha means ‘unity’ in Woi-wurrung language and was chosen because sport brings community and people together in celebration.
Proudly using Woi-wurrung language is central to our identity and our culture. For too long, our language has been denied, and it is great to be able to reclaim our language and bring it back to life for all to enjoy.
Constructed by Built Environs, Bundha Sports Centre will comprise of four competition level basketball, netball, and volleyball courts, a multi-purpose futsal court, a gymnasium, cafe and lounge area and community facilities.
Designed to integrate with the two indoor sports courts of the Wurun Senior Campus, it will encourage shared use and create a seven-court facility outside of school hours.
City of Yarra Mayor Cr Edward Crossland is looking forward to seeing the benefits the centre will bring to the sporting community.
Yarra City Council is pleased to work in partnership with the Victorian Government to deliver community facilities like Bundha Sports Centre so everyone can enjoy the benefits it has to offer.
The project is being delivered by Development Victoria in partnership with the Department of Transport and Planning, Sport and Recreation Victoria and Yarra City Council. Construction is on track for completion in the second half of 2024.
