Mother and calf exploring the new pools

Zoos Victoria’s herd of Asian Elephants has made the move to their new home at Werribee Open Range Zoo, marking the completion of the project’s expansion.

The $88m expansion, delivered by Development Victoria in partnership with Zoos Victoria includes a purpose-built elephant habitat, pedestrian trail, viewing area overlooking the elephant pools and landscapes for priority conservation species.

Development Victoria’s Acting Group Head of Civic Infrastructure Benjamin Delaney said it was a very exciting and complex project for our team to be involved in.

We are proud to have worked closely with Zoos Victoria and Fairbrother Constructions to successfully deliver this important asset for Werribee Zoo. This is a fantastic outcome for the Zoo, visitors and most importantly, for the elephants.

The new 21-hectare habitat, which is the equivalent size of five MCGs, has been specially designed to meet the needs of elephants, offering larger spaces for roaming, foraging, and socialising. This move aligns with Zoos Victoria’s commitment to provide the highest standard of care and wellbeing for these incredible animals.

The herd of nine Asian Elephants moved to their new home in February and have spent time settling into their new environment.
