Overview

The new $46 million, 3,700sqm Sound Stage 6 will increase Docklands Studios Melbourne’s capacity by 60 per cent and help attract large scale international productions.

Sound Stage 6 will be one of the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and will complement the existing stages and facilities for smaller TV and film projects at the studio.

In 2018-19 screen projects supported by the Victorian Government generated $251 million and supported more than 8,300 local jobs.

Construction of Sound Stage 6 is now completed, with the official launch held on March 26 2022.

Docklands Studio Melbourne Sound Stage 6 steel work video update

Docklands Studios Melbourne’s new $46 million Sound Stage 6 reached a major milestone with the completion of the foundations and work beginning on the main structure.

600 tonnes of steel girders were lifted into place to form the shell of the new 3700m2 sound stage, increasing Docklands Studios Melbourne’s capacity by 60 per cent.

The sound stage also features a massive 900,000-litre water tank giving it the flexibility to attract a greater range of productions.

Community

A section of the Moonee Ponds Creek trail adjacent to Docklands Studio Melbourne was closed on 23 November 2020 to enable the construction of the new Sound Stage 6 project.

Trail users were diverted to Pearl River Road via the path between Docklands Studios Melbourne and the O’Brien Icehouse. The trail is also diverted near the Ron Barassi Senior Oval.

The diversion route was determined in consultation with the Bicycle Network, City of Melbourne and, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and, Planning. Signage and road markings will be installed around the area to mark the alternate route.

In the long-term, Development Victoria will continue to work with the City of Melbourne to achieve the vision of their 2019 Moonee Ponds Creek Strategic Opportunities Plan which proposes a new pathway near the studios as part of a larger rejuvenation of the Moonee Ponds Creek.
