Overview
Kew Cottages facility provided accommodation and support services for people with intellectual disabilities from the late 1880s to about 2005.
Kew Residential Services is now complete and includes 20 community homes for 100 former residents of Kew Residential Services with intellectual disabilities, and the delivery of more than 280 private dwellings.
These works represent an important investment in the needs of people living with a disability.
A further 73 off-site houses were also delivered as part of the project by the Department of Human Services and the Office of Housing to support 380 former residents of Kew Residential Services.
These works are governed by a project development agreement between the State, represented by Development Victoria, and the Kew Development Corporation Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Walker Corporation.
Delivered over nine stages, the project also included the restoration of three heritage buildings and the creation of 7.7 hectares of high-quality open space for the community to enjoy.
Approach
The site has been progressively redeveloped as a low-density, high-quality residential estate that integrates special needs and private housing with extensive public open space.

The redevelopment of the site, which was known as Kew Cottages until the mid-1990s, has delivered a high-quality, integrated residential community in an established inner Melbourne suburb.

Location
The Kew Residential services redevelopment is located at Main Drive, Kew.
Development Victoria acknowledges the Wurundjeri people as the Traditional Custodians of the land.
Outcomes
The project has created a housing legacy for many people in the community and allowed for additional government investment in homes for those with a disability.
Twenty community homes for people living with a disability have been constructed on the site and seamlessly integrated among private dwellings, which includes an apartment complex and the restoration and sale of three heritage buildings.
