Overview
Funded by the Victorian Government, the Werribee Open Range Zoo Expansion will deliver a world-class experience, with a purpose-built elephant habitat to house Zoos Victoria’s Asian elephant herd that will be relocated from Melbourne Zoo, and expanded facilities including pedestrian pathway trail, viewing area overlooking the elephant pools and landscapes for priority conservation species.
The Elephant Trail will comprise a 21-hectare open range habitat featuring a central yard with sandpit and deep-water pools.
Visitors will be able to view the Elephant barn including a communal area, training yards and breeding facilities. Five outer habitats will retain and build upon existing vegetation and significant trees. Two dedicated overpass bridges will allow Asian elephants to pass over visitor walking trails, between the central management yard and outer habitats.
Development Victoria is delivering the new elephant habitat and waterhole trail in partnership with Zoos Victoria.
As a not-for-profit conservation organisation, the Werribee Open Range Zoo Expansion will allow Zoos Victoria to connect more visitors with animals in a meaningful way and educate a larger audience about fighting extinction.
