Artist impression - new NGV contemporary Building

This week the Victorian Government and the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) unveiled the stunning winner of the design competition for the new NGV Contemporary, set to become Australia’s largest gallery dedicated to contemporary art and design.

The successful team is led by Australian architect Angelo Candalepas and Associates includes 20 leading architecture, design and engineering firms from around Victoria and Australia.  The winning design was selected from a shortlist in a two-stage process that began with an open call for submissions from Australian architects and design teams.

Selected by an expert jury, the new gallery will boast 13,000 square metres of display space, crowned with a rooftop sculpture terrace and restaurant with stunning views of the Melbourne CBD and beyond. The design also features a unique 40-metre-high spherical hall.

The new gallery will be the ‘jewel-in the-crown’ of the wider Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation project, which will deliver one of the world’s greatest creative and cultural destinations, following the Victorian Government’s $1.7 billion commitment to the project in 2021.

Development Victoria is proud to be the delivery agency for the Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation project, Australia’s largest ever cultural infrastructure project. We are working closely on behalf of newly formed Melbourne Arts Precent Corporation (MAP Co) who will take responsibility of the new open space as well as Federation Square.

Early works on the precinct are anticipated to commence in mid-2022.
