Development Victoria has recently celebrated a major milestone for its Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre project which is on track for completion by mid-2024.
The ceremony signifies the completion of the building’s frame, with work soon commencing on the fit out for the new sports centre.
The Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre features an innovative design and will be one of the few vertically designed sports centres in Australia. The vertical design is in response to the demand for sports facilities in built-up inner-city areas and allows for creative use of space while also integrating with the two indoor sports courts of the Wurun Senior Campus next door.
The centre will include 4 multi-purpose courts for basketball and netball, a multi-purpose court for futsal, a gymnasium, café and lounge area, community facilities, unisex change rooms, a foyer and reception area.
We are proud to be delivering this fantastic new multi-purpose venue in Melbourne’s inner north, which will support local sports clubs and create a new sporting facility for the whole community to enjoy.
– Development Victoria’s Group Head Civic Infrastructure, Hannah Clement.
This project forms part of the new Fitzroy Gasworks Precinct, which will see the former Gasworks site transformed to create a new neighbourhood, featuring 1,200 new homes – 20% of which will be affordable - close to public transport, as well as a senior high school, open space, a multi-use sports centre and commercial spaces.
The Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre is being constructed by Built Environs on the Fitzroy Gasworks site, generating approximately 150 jobs during construction.
Development Victoria is proud to be delivering this project, working in partnership with the Department of Transport and Planning, Sport and Recreation Victoria and Yarra City Council.
The Victorian Government has committed $49.5 million to the project and there is a $5 million contribution from Yarra City Council, who will manage the centre.
