“Engineers have advised Development Victoria today that they have assessed Central Pier as being unsafe for use, requiring immediate closure,” Geoff Ward, spokesperson for Development Victoria said.

“As a result, formal notice was provided to all operators of premises that the pier must be vacated.

“Engineers have been inspecting the pier every two months since November 2018 and had previously provided certification that supported the ongoing occupation of the pier,” he said.

“However, given the notice received from the engineers today, there was no alternative but to require the pier be vacated in order to preserve public safety.”
