The transformation of the Fitzroy Gasworks site continues with the start of important upgrade works to the Queens Parade service lane between Smith Street and George Street.

The works which start in March this year, are being delivered on behalf of the Department of Transport and Planning. Built Environs have been appointed to deliver the works who are our trusted construction partners already responsible for constructing the Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre.

“These works will improve safety and connectivity for cyclists, pedestrians, public transport users and vehicles who are already accessing the Wurun Senior Campus and it is great to see the project coming to life,” Niall Cunningham, Group Head of Precincts at Development Victoria said.

Included will be a new separated bike lane, upgrade to footpaths and landscaping, an additional accessible car park space and a new bus stop platform which will be level with the footpath.

Local residents, school and sports centre users will gain significant safety and connectivity improvements from the service lane upgrade with only a few minor disruptions which will be closely monitored by Development Victoria.

Works are expected to be complete by mid-2024 to coincide with the opening of the Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre which has been taking shape since it began construction in 2022. The centre features an innovative design and will be one of the few vertically designed sports centres in Australia.

“We’re transforming the site of the former Fitzroy Gasworks into a thriving new precinct, including the delivery of approximately 1,200 much needed homes, including 20% affordable housing, leading sports and education facilities and public open spaces close to jobs, transport and services.” Mr Cunningham added.
