Major milestone for Fitzroy Gasworks site

The transformation of the former Fitzroy Gasworks site in into a vibrant new neighbourhood is one step closer, with the project’s development plan now released for community feedback.

The site is being delivered by Development Victoria, the Victorian Government’s development agency, and will include affordable housing options close to public transport, a 650-student senior high school, open space, a new multi-use sports centre, underground car parking and options for bicycle parking.

The Fitzroy Gasworks is an important part of Fitzroy North’s heritage and the vision is to create an urban village close to public transport, the CBD and established community facilities.

The proposed Development Plan has been designed following extensive community and stakeholder consultation and will help shape the future of the site.

Plans also include the delivery of approximately 1,200 apartments, with a focus on delivering sustainability initiatives, including waste management, transport and water and energy conservation. The proposed masterplan for the site recently achieved a 6 Star Green Star Communities rating.

A demand for more sport and recreational facilities in the area will see the multi-use sports centre built over two levels, with four indoor sports courts and a new gym.  The site will be available for use by sporting clubs and the local community.  This complements the two adjacent indoor sports courts that form part of the new senior secondary campus.  Construction of the multi-use sports centre is scheduled to begin mid-2022, with the process to secure a contractor already underway.

The project’s development plan has been designed based on extensive community and stakeholder consultation and outlines planning controls, policies and principles that will guide the design and construction of the site.

The development plan is open for community feedback over the next four weeks.  Following submissions, the finalised plan will then be submitted for approval to begin the redevelopment of the site.
