Sports going up at Fitzroy Gasworks

Australia’s first vertically constructed multi-use indoor sports centre is a step closer, with the appointment of the head contractor to build the innovative sports centre on the Fitzroy Gasworks site.

Built Environs has been announced as the head contractor and will soon begin work on the project, backed by a $49.5 million funding commitment from the Victorian Government plus a $5 million contribution from the Yarra City Council who will manage the centre.

Early works are proposed to commence on site in June 2022. Major construction is expected to generate approximately 250 jobs and scheduled to be completed in early 2024. 

New designs for the project reveal four multi-purpose courts for highball sports, a multi-purpose court including futsal, 1,000+ sqm gymnasium, café and lounge area, community facilities, change rooms, umpire change rooms, foyer and reception.

The sports centre’s innovative vertical design is in response to the demand for sports facilities in built-up inner-city areas where land is scarce and comes at a premium. 

The centre will provide much needed new facilities for a range of local sports clubs including the Collingwood Basketball Association who will host games and competitions in the heart of Fitzroy.

The Victorian Government funding for the sports centre project is part of more than $1.2 billion invested by the Government in community sport and active recreation infrastructure since 2014.

The new sports centre will be built adjacent to the Wurun Senior Campus which opened in Term One of the 2022 school year, also made possible by a $84 million investment from the Victorian Government.

The new sports centre will be designed and constructed to integrate with the school’s two indoor sports courts to enable shared use and create a six-court facility outside of school hours.

The project is a partnership between the Department of Transport Infrastructure, Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (Sport and Recreation Victoria), Development Victoria as the delivery agency and Yarra City Council as funding partner and operator.
