Last month, the Ballarat West Employment Zone (BWEZ) project team were invited to tour the Westlab facility in Stage 1 of the precinct. Westlab supply and distribute educational and scientific lab equipment and consumables around Australia and internationally.

Westlab successfully acquired land from Development Victoria during an Expression of Interest release in 2017 and since then, have built an amazing facility and employed over 20 staff.

It was great for the team to learn about Westlab’s growth in recent times - especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when the demand for laboratory consumables was at its peak.

The team were also impressed with the colourful façade of the building and the modern internal fit-out which included a baby grand piano for staff to play in the foyer!

“Moving into BWEZ with Local and State Government support has been a game-changer for Westlab,” said Peter Grace, Director at Westlab Group.

The modern infrastructure fuelled our growth and having access to resources and a vibrant business community elevated our success. We're grateful for this opportunity and highly recommend it to others.

Peter also shared how staff have been reinvigorated since the relocation of the business into the new premises and how the move provided renewed energy and productivity.

Westlab have since acquired another lot in Stage 1B, and the team look forward to seeing their further expansion plans come to life which will include the creation of at least another five jobs.

BWEZ is a $30 million joint initiative between the Victorian Government and the City of Ballarat to support the region's economic growth.

The 438-hectare project involves the development of surplus Crown land for industrial, wholesale, logistics, construction, commercial and residential uses, encouraging employment growth in Ballarat and the surrounding region.

Development Victoria acknowledges the Wadawurrung people as the Traditional Custodians of the land at BWEZ.
